Audi A4 / A5 / Q5 · S4 / S5 / SQ5 — B9

Audi's best chassis in a generation — kept that way by the intervals below.

2.0T EA888 Gen3B · DL382 7-speed S tronic

Engine

— Audi moved these engines to thinner oil on a long interval for fleet economy, not longevity — we halve it and confirm the correct spec for your build date rather than trusting the cap.Book an appointment →

— Forty thousand is where we see coils start masking tired plugs — we do both together on cars that carry a tune.Book an appointment →

— The Gen3B added port injection precisely to wash these valves — most B9s never need a cleaning, and we prove it with a borescope instead of selling you one.

— Same EA888 weak point as the smaller cars — a torn diaphragm whistles, idles rough, and pushes oil past seals that are expensive to reach.

— Cheap, fast, and the turbo breathes through it every mile — we don't stretch this one.

Cooling

— "Lifetime" coolant is a warranty word, not an engineering one — fresh G12evo is cheap insurance for pumps, valves, and the heater core.Book an appointment →

— The B9 2.0T carries the EA888's composite pump module and its habits — we catch the first weep before the low-coolant light ever comes on.Book an appointment →

Transmission

— The DL382's clutches and mechatronic share this oil — 40k is a hard ceiling in our book, and shudder is the sound of it being missed.Book an appointment →

Drivetrain

— A quart of gear oil per axle every 60k is the entire cost of keeping a quattro drivetrain honest.Book an appointment →

— Many B9 A4/A5s run the on-demand "quattro ultra" clutch pack — we verify engagement behavior with a scan tool so all-wheel drive is there the day you need it.

Brakes

— Brake fluid absorbs water from day one — two Chicago winters is enough, and the pedal tells the truth.Book an appointment →

— Wear is a measurement, not an opinion — and the EPB gets properly retracted with a scan tool, never pried.

Suspension

— The B9's five-link front end steers beautifully until one bushing goes soft — we load-test each arm so the first clunk never arrives.

Engineering notes

Known issues on this platform

0150,000–90,000 mi

Coolant pump & thermostat module weep — 2.0T

The composite pump module seeps at its seams with no puddle and often no warning light — just a slowly dropping level. Caught at the first weep it's routine; run low it's a very different estimate.

Cooling-system pressure test & module replacement

0260,000–100,000 mi

PCV / breather failure — 2.0T

The diaphragm tears with age and pulls vacuum on the crankcase: whistle at idle, rough running, oil pushed past seals. Minutes to diagnose properly, cheap to fix early.

PCV assembly replacement

0360,000 mi onward

DL382 S tronic shudder & harsh engagement

Low-speed shudder and clunky engagement on 2.0T cars almost always trace to fluid history. A documented 40k service record is worth real money at resale — and a quiet driveline every day.

S tronic fluid & filter service, adaptation reset

0460,000–100,000 mi

Front suspension bushings & links

The five-link front end masks single worn bushings well — steering slowly dulls instead of knocking. We load-test each arm rather than waiting for noise.

Suspension inspection & arm replacement

0560,000–100,000 mi

48V/12V mild-hybrid system — 2020+ cars

Facelift B9s add a belt starter-generator and its own battery. A tired MHEV battery mimics bigger problems — start-stop faults and phantom warnings — and is a scan-tool diagnosis, not a parts cannon.

Diagnostic assessment — MHEV system test

— S4, S5, and SQ5 share the 3.0T EA839 column; RS models are welcome — ask us for the RS-specific schedule.

— Carbon and Haldex procedures referenced on our MQB chart are shared VAG standards; the B9's quattro is crown-gear or quattro-ultra, not Haldex.

Intervals reflect factory guidance and Veyra field experience for typical use. Severe service — track, short-trip, extreme climate — shortens them; ask us.
