BMW 3 Series — E90 / E92

The last analog 3 Series. Every one of its habits is known — and every one is manageable.

325i / 328i / 330i — N52 3.0 (naturally aspirated)

Engine

— The 15k condition-based interval aged these engines fast — a third of it is why the good ones are still on the road.Book an appointment →

— A tuned N54 eats plugs and coils as consumables — we treat them that way instead of chasing phantom misfires.Book an appointment →

— On the turbo engines a single tired coil takes the smoothness first and throws the code last — pairs of symptoms, sets of parts.

— Every E9x eventually seeps from both — the smell of oil on a hot manifold is the platform's signature. Budget for the reseal once and it's done for a decade.Book an appointment →

— Rough cold idle on an N52 is a solenoid screen nine times out of ten — twenty minutes, not a teardown.Book an appointment →

Cooling

— The E9x electric pump is a when, not an if — it fails without warning and cooks the engine in a mile. At 80k, replacement is maintenance.Book an appointment →

— E9x cooling plastics have a service life whether BMW printed one or not — the expansion tank splits on the car that never got one.Book an appointment →

Transmission

— The ZF6 responds to fresh fluid like it's ten years younger — "lifetime fill" is why so many didn't reach their lifetime.Book an appointment →

— Gear oil is the cheapest synchro repair there is.Book an appointment →

Drivetrain

— A quart of gear oil every 60k — the whole cost of a quiet rear end.Book an appointment →

Brakes

— The book is right here — it just needs to actually happen.Book an appointment →

Suspension

— At this age the suspension is original on most cars — one refresh returns the steering the E90 was praised for.Book an appointment →

Engineering notes

Known issues on this platform

0160,000–90,000 mi

Electric water pump & thermostat

The defining E9x failure: sudden, electrical, no warning weep. Proactive replacement by 80k is the single best dollar spent on this chassis.

Pump & thermostat replacement

0240,000–120,000 mi

N54: HPFP, injectors & wastegate rattle

The N54's famous trio. Pump and injectors telegraph through long cranks and rail-pressure data; wastegate rattle arrives as a metallic chatter on light throttle. All three are known quantities with known fixes — none of them are reasons to fear the engine.

Fuel-system diagnosis · turbo inspection

0380,000–120,000 mi

Valve-cover & oil filter housing leaks

Both gaskets bake hard with age and seep onto hot parts. The full reseal, done once with quality parts, closes the subject for years.

Gasket reseal service

0480,000–130,000 mi

Cooling-system plastics — expansion tank & radiator necks

Original plastics at this age fail without ceremony, usually on the hottest day of the year. A staged refresh during other work costs a fraction of an emergency.

Cooling-system refresh

0570,000 mi onward

VANOS solenoids & rough cold idle — N52

The N52's shivering cold idle is almost always solenoid screens, not the lifters the internet blames first. Diagnosis before parts, always.

Solenoid cleaning & idle diagnosis

— M3 (E90/E92, S65 V8) is its own platform with its own chart — coming to the library.

— Manual-gearbox and automatic rows apply to cars so equipped; both existed across the range.

Intervals reflect factory guidance and Veyra field experience for typical use. Severe service — track, short-trip, extreme climate — shortens them; ask us.
