Dodge Charger / Challenger HEMI — Domestic Performance

Honest V8s with two famous habits. Watched for on schedule, they run forever.

5.7 HEMI R/T · ZF 8-speed / 6-speed manual

Engine

— The lifter and cam story on these engines is an oil story first — clean oil on the short interval is the cheapest cam job you'll ever buy.Book an appointment →

— The HEMI tick that matters is a lifter roller starting to fail, and it's audible before it's fatal — we listen with trained ears at every visit so an early diagnosis never becomes a camshaft and lifter job.Book an appointment →

— Two per cylinder, sixteen total — the book interval is honest and we hold to it, reading each pair for its cylinder.Book an appointment →

— The classic HEMI cold-start tick that fades with heat is a broken manifold bolt, not a lifter — a five-minute check tells them apart, and catching one broken bolt beats extracting four.Book an appointment →

— A big NA V8 moves a lot of air — the filter is cheap and the throttle response says thank you.

Cooling

— Ten-year coolant is an accounting decision — five years is an engineering one.Book an appointment →

Transmission

— Same ZF box the Germans use, same "lifetime" myth — pan, filter, and fresh fluid at 60k and it shifts like day one.Book an appointment →

— Gear oil is the cheapest synchro repair there is — especially behind 485 lb-ft.Book an appointment →

Drivetrain

— Sticky tires and launches cook diff oil — cars that see the strip get it at half interval.Book an appointment →

Brakes

— Four-thousand-pound cars deserve dry fluid — two years, held.Book an appointment →

Suspension

— Mass plus torque works the rear cradle bushings hard — wheel hop that wasn't there last summer is usually a bushing, not a tire.

Engineering notes

Known issues on this platform

0180,000–130,000 mi · earlier with neglected oil

MDS lifter / cam roller failure

The HEMI's defining risk: a lifter roller flattens, then eats its cam lobe. It announces itself as a distinct tick under light load — audible, diagnosable, and cheap to catch next to what it becomes. Clean oil on schedule is the best defense; trained ears at every service are the second.

Lifter diagnosis · cam & lifter replacement

0260,000–120,000 mi

Exhaust manifold bolt breakage

Heat cycles snap the small manifold bolts, usually rear cylinders first — a cold tick that fades as metal expands. One broken bolt is a routine job; four rusted stubs are an afternoon of extraction. Checked every visit.

Manifold bolt replacement

0380,000 mi onward

"Lifetime" ZF8 fluid taken literally

Identical gearbox, identical myth, identical fix as the European cars we service — fluid at 60k.

ZF 8-speed service

0460,000–100,000 mi

Rear cradle & diff bushing wear

Launches and torque wear the rear bushings into wheel hop and clunk — load-tested by hand before parts are thrown.

Bushing inspection & replacement

— Hellcat (6.2 supercharged) runs its own chart — ask us.

— Strip use moves oil, diff, and transmission fluid to the short end of every window above.

Intervals reflect factory guidance and Veyra field experience for typical use. Severe service — track, short-trip, extreme climate — shortens them; ask us.
