The EA888 rewards discipline. This is the schedule we hold our own cars to.

2.0T EA888 Gen3 · 6-speed manual · FWD

Engine

— Direct injection, turbo heat, and short Chicago trips shear oil well before 10k — we halve the interval and check for consumption while the car is in the air.Book an appointment →

— Misfires under boost are almost always plugs first — on tuned cars we fit one step colder and run the short end of the window.Book an appointment →

— The EA888's direct injection coats intake valves in carbon the book pretends doesn't exist — we borescope first and blast only when the evidence says so, typically 60–80k.Book an appointment →

— A failed PCV diaphragm announces itself as a whistle, rough idle, and rear-main leaks — a small part that protects a very expensive set of seals.

— IS20/IS38 wastegate rattle telegraphs itself early — we check for flapper play at every service before it becomes boost loss.

— Gen3 tensioners are far better than the early EA888's, but a cold-start rattle is a same-week appointment, not a someday.

— A turbo pulls hard through this filter — we run the shorter interval and always inspect the intake tract while it's open.

— Belts fail on cold mornings, not on lifts — we replace on age and condition rather than waiting for the squeal.

Cooling

— "Lifetime" coolant is a warranty word, not an engineering one — fresh G12evo is cheap insurance for the water pump and heater core.Book an appointment →

— The plastic pump/thermostat module is this engine's most common failure — we catch the first weep long before the low-coolant light does.Book an appointment →

Transmission

— Gear oil is the cheapest synchro repair there is — especially on cars that see launches.Book an appointment →

Brakes

— Brake fluid absorbs water from day one — two Chicago winters is enough, and the pedal tells the truth.Book an appointment →

— Wear is a measurement, not an opinion — you get numbers and photos, then decide.

Suspension

— MQB front bushings soften long before they knock — we load-test the arms so steering feel never fades into "normal."

Shared Veyra procedures

EA888 carbon service — borescope first

Borescope from 50,000 mi · clean as indicated

One procedure across every direct-injection EA888 we service: scope the intake valves, photograph what we find, and walnut-blast only when the deposits justify it. Dual-injection Gen3B cars usually pass; earlier B8-era engines usually don't. Either way, you see the photos before we recommend anything.

Walnut-blast carbon cleaning

Haldex AWD service — the oil and the screen the book forgets

Every 30,000 mi

Fluid alone is not a Haldex service. We drop the pump, clean its pickup screen, and verify clutch engagement with a scan tool afterward — the difference between all-wheel drive that works in January and one that quietly gave up in October.

Engineering notes

Known issues on this platform

0150,000–90,000 mi

Water pump / thermostat module weep

The composite pump and thermostat housing seep coolant at the seams, often with no puddle and no light — just a slowly dropping level. Caught early it's a routine module replacement; run dry it's a head-off conversation.

Cooling-system pressure test & module replacement

0250,000–80,000 mi

Intake-valve carbon buildup

Direct injection means fuel never washes the intake valves. Cold-start stumble, soft midrange, and a lazy top end are the tells. We borescope before recommending anything.

Walnut-blast carbon cleaning

0360,000–100,000 mi

PCV diaphragm failure

The check-valve diaphragm tears with age, pulling vacuum on the crankcase — whistle at idle, rough running, and oil pushed past the rear main seal.

PCV assembly replacement

0440,000–80,000 mi

Wastegate rattle — IS20 / IS38

Play develops in the wastegate linkage and flapper, rattling on light throttle before it costs boost. Early linkage adjustment or an updated actuator beats a turbo replacement.

Boost-system & wastegate inspection

0550,000–100,000 mi

Haldex pump failure from a neglected screen

On R, S3, and quattro MQB cars the Haldex pump pulls fluid through a fine screen the factory schedule never cleans. When it clogs, the pump burns out and the rear axle disappears — usually discovered in the first snow.

Haldex service with pump-screen cleaning

— Tuned cars (Stage 1+) move spark plugs, DSG service, and oil analysis to the short end of every window above.

Intervals reflect factory guidance and Veyra field experience for typical use. Severe service — track, short-trip, extreme climate — shortens them; ask us.
